The calculator uses PSA's real tiers: the fee depends on what the card is worth after grading, so a card that comes back a valuable 10 pays a higher tier (the upcharge). See PSA grading cost and tiers. Tiers checked September 20, 2026. PSA changes them often.
How to use the answer
- Plan for a 9, hope for a 10. Most clean, pack-fresh modern cards come back a PSA 9. If a 9 loses money, you are gambling on a 10.
- Look at the card first. Centering, corners, edges and surface decide the grade. One white corner or a print line usually ends the chance of a 10. See what graders check.
- Count every cost. The PSA fee for the tier the graded card lands in, shipping both ways, insurance, and the selling fee when the slab sells.
- The fee sets the floor. With PSA's cheapest open tier at $59.99, a slab has to sell for roughly $75 more than the raw card just to break even.

Grading math questions
How much does a card need to be worth to grade it?
There is no fixed number. What matters is the gap between the raw price and the graded price. As a rule of thumb, the graded value at the grade you realistically expect should beat the raw price by more than the grading fee, shipping and selling fees combined. The calculator shows that break-even price.
What selling fee should I use?
Around 13% covers the big marketplaces once payment processing is included. If you sell through your own store the fee is closer to 3%. Our guide on where to sell Pokémon cards compares them.
Does this work for PSA, BGS and CGC?
The math is the same for any grading company. Put in that company's fee and the values its slabs sell for. PSA slabs usually sell for the most, so PSA values are the default.
