PSA Grading Your Pokémon Cards? Check These 4 Things First

Published October 2, 2026 · Updated October 3, 2026 · Greedy TCG

> Quick answer: Before you send a Pokémon card to PSA, check four things: the grading fee, the cost of shipping and insurance, the card's condition, and the wait time. Only grade when the graded price beats every one of those costs.

Grading can raise a card's value. It can also cost more than it adds.

The difference usually comes down to four checks. Miss one, and grading may never pay for itself. Here's what to look at before you submit.

How much does PSA grading cost now?

PSA stopped its value tier, which was its cheapest option for collectors. Grading now costs more per card than it used to.

That changes the math for low- and mid-value cards. A card that was worth grading under the old value tier may not be worth it now.

PSA's faster services cost more again. The top tier offers about a week's turnaround, but you pay a premium for that speed.

PSA Japan has its own Standard service, priced in yen, with an estimated turnaround of 100 business days. Wherever you submit from, check the current fee schedule for your region before you commit.

Check 1: Know the real per-card grading fee before you pick which cards to send.

What other costs come with grading a Pokémon card?

The grading fee is only part of the bill.

You also pay to ship your cards to PSA. Then you pay for the return trip. On top of that, most collectors add insurance, which is smart when cards are valuable.

Grading fees, shipping both ways and insurance all count against the value the grade adds. Add them up per card, not just per order.

Check 2: Add shipping both ways, plus insurance, to your total cost.

What do PSA graders look for on a card?

PSA graders check three main things:

  • Surface: scratches and dirt on the front and back.
  • Corners and edges: any whitening, where the colour has worn off.
  • Tampering: signs the card has been altered in any way.

You can check most of this yourself before you submit. Use good light and look at the card from several angles. Scratches often only show when light hits the surface at a slant.

Look closely at the back of the card, too. Whitening on the edges and corners is easy to miss from the front.

Check 3: Look for scratches and white edges, just like PSA does.

Will a clean-looking card get a PSA 10?

Not always. A card that looks clean still isn't guaranteed a PSA 10.

Graders work to a strict standard, and small flaws can be hard to spot without close inspection. A card you think is perfect might come back a grade or two lower.

That matters, because the value gap between grades can be large. If your plan only works at a PSA 10, think about whether it still makes sense at a lower grade.

How long does PSA grading take?

This is where many collectors get caught out.

PSA has a backlog of nearly 10 million cards. Some collectors wait nearly a year to get their cards back.

Demand isn't slowing down, either. Submissions to PSA jumped 20% in May 2026.

A long wait means your money is tied up in cards you can't sell or trade. The market can also move while you wait, in either direction.

Faster services exist, but they cost more. That extra cost goes straight back into your math.

Check 4: Factor in the wait. Some cards may be away for close to a year.

When is it worth grading a Pokémon card?

Put the four checks together:

1. The grading fee per card.

2. Shipping both ways, plus insurance.

3. The card's real condition, and the grade it's likely to get.

4. How long your money will be tied up.

Then compare the total against the graded price you can realistically expect. Only grade when the graded price beats every cost.

If it doesn't, keeping the card raw may be the better move.

FAQ

Is PSA grading still worth it after the value tier ended?

It can be, but for fewer cards. With the cheapest tier gone, grading only makes sense when the expected graded price clearly beats the fee, shipping, insurance and wait time.

Can I get my cards back from PSA faster?

Yes. PSA's top tier has about a week's turnaround, but it costs much more than standard grading. Make sure the faster service still leaves you with a profit.

Does a perfect-looking card always get a PSA 10?

No. A card that looks clean still isn't guaranteed a PSA 10. Graders check the surface, corners, edges and signs of tampering closely, and small flaws can lower the grade.
