> Quick answer: To check whether your Pokémon card is off-center, scan it flat, measure left vs. right and top vs. bottom, then divide the larger border by the total to get a ratio like 60/40. Perfect is 50/50. Check the back too, but remember that good centering does not prove a card is real.
Your best Pokémon pull could be off-center right now, and you might not know it yet. Centering is one of the first things graders look at, and you can check it at home in a few minutes.
Here is the full Greedy Report centering test. It's four steps plus one final check.
What does centering mean on a Pokémon card?
Centering is how evenly the artwork and frame sit inside the card's borders. You compare opposing borders: left against right, and top against bottom.
The result is written as a ratio. A perfectly centered card is 50/50, which means both borders are exactly the same width. The further the ratio moves from 50/50, the more off-center the card is.
Can a card from a fresh pack be off-center?
Yes. Brand-new cards straight from sealed packs can be badly off-center.
This comes from the factory. Variation in printing and cutting can shift the image toward one edge before the card is even packed. A card that has never been touched can still have centering problems, so check every pull you care about.
How do you photograph a card to check centering?
Step 1: Scan it flat.
A flatbed scan is the most reliable option. If you use a camera, shoot straight on with the lens directly above the card.
Don't shoot at an angle. Angled photos distort the borders and make one side look wider or narrower than it really is, so you'll measure the wrong thing.
How do you measure Pokémon card borders?
Step 2: Measure left vs. right, then top vs. bottom.
Measure under magnification so you can see exactly where each border starts and stops. Work in millimeters and record each measurement.
Measure one pair at a time. Do left and right first, then top and bottom. Each pair gets its own ratio, so a card can be centered side to side and still be off top to bottom.
How do you calculate a centering ratio?
Step 3: Divide the bigger border by the total.
Add the two opposing borders together to get the total. Then divide the larger border by that total.
For example, if the left border is 3 mm and the right border is 2 mm:
- Total: 3 mm + 2 mm = 5 mm
- Larger border ÷ total: 3 ÷ 5 = 0.60
- Centering: 60/40
Do the same with the top and bottom borders. Now you have two ratios that show exactly how the front of your card is centered.
Does back centering matter for a PSA 10?
Step 4: Flip it over.
The back counts too. Repeat the same scan, measure and divide process on the reverse of the card.
The back gets more room than the front. PSA allows about 75/25 back centering for a PSA 10, while its front standards are much stricter. A card with a lopsided back can still be in the running, but the front needs to be much closer to even.
What centering does a BGS Pristine 10 need?
Beckett is tougher at the top end. A BGS Pristine 10 needs centering at or very close to 50/50.
If you're hoping for a Pristine grade, your measurements need to come out nearly even on every side. Even a small shift can rule it out.
Does perfect centering prove a card is real?
No. This is the twist, and it's the last check.
A card can measure a flawless 50/50 and still be fake. Centering only tells you where the image sits on the card. It tells you nothing about where the card came from.
To check authenticity, compare your card side by side with a known genuine card. Look at:
- Fonts: lettering, spacing and text weight
- Colors: tone and saturation on the front and back
- Holo texture: the pattern and how it catches light
- Cardstock: how the card feels and how thick it is
If anything looks wrong, don't trust the centering numbers alone.
The centering test in short
1. Scan flat or shoot straight on.
2. Measure left vs. right and top vs. bottom under magnification.
3. Divide the bigger border by the total to get the ratio.
4. Flip it and check the back.
5. Confirm it's genuine by checking fonts, colors, holo texture and cardstock.

FAQ
What is a good centering ratio for a Pokémon card?
Perfect centering is 50/50. The closer your card is to that, the better. A BGS Pristine 10 needs centering at or very close to 50/50.
How do I work out a centering ratio?
Add the two opposing borders, then divide the larger one by the total. A 3 mm border and a 2 mm border total 5 mm, and 3 ÷ 5 gives 60/40.
Can a perfectly centered card be fake?
Yes. Good centering doesn't prove a card is genuine. Compare the fonts, colors, holo texture and cardstock with a known real card.
